Types of Qualitative Research
Qualitative research is a type of investigation that aims at finding answers to a situation and uses scientific means to answer the question. The results from this study can be used by other researchers in other fields to get answers to other questions related to this. There are three types of qualitative research; phenomenological, grounded theory and ethnographic research. Phenomenological approach and grounded theory have quite a number of similarities and few differences.
Similarities
During data collection, both methods, that is; phenomenological approach and grounded theory require that the researcher spend ample time interacting with the respondents in this study so as to collect enough data for analysis. After data collection, both methods require that the respondents are involved during the data analysis to ensure that the collected data was trustworthy and accurate. The respondents’ perception on the situation being investigated on is paramount in both methods. Since qualitative research is scientific research, it is of importance that the researchers get to learn about the respondents’ experiences concerning the situation being investigated on. This is common in both phenomenology and grounded research (What is the difference between grounded theory and phenomenology?, 2011).
Differences
One major difference between phenomenological method and grounded theory is that the latter makes use of all available data sources that may assist in developing the theory of the study. This may include existing literature, interviews, observation and research. Data collected from all sources is carefully analyzed and used to develop the theory of the research. Phenomenological does not utilize multiple data collection methods (What is the difference between grounded theory and phenomenology?, 2011). Collected data in grounded theory is compared with each other till a theory that is embedded in the data is realized while in phenomenological research, all collected data is treated as a unit and no comparisons are made CITATION Typ l 1033 (Types of Qualitative Research: Explained Within a SOTL Framework, n.d.). Phenomenology seeks to capture and analyze user experience while grounded theory involves collecting data using multiple methods and derive a theory from the data CITATION Joa13 l 1033 (Joanakompa, 2013).
