Comment on the usefulness of Benner’s work in your present or future role. Provide several examples.
Benner’s theory states that nurses must develop their knowledge of patient care and skills by obtaining experience over the years through practice and they should continue to gain knowledge through furthering their education background. Benner’s theory was described in 5 levels of nursing experience as; novice, advanced, beginner, competent, proficient and expert. According to HRF (2017), Benner’s theory is an idea that is based on the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition. The Dreyfus brothers believed that learning was an experiential process, supplemented by a situation-based process. People could learn to be a pilot, for example, by watching how an experience pilot is able to steer an aircraft.
In my future role as a Nurse Educator, Benner’s theory will be useful in the orientation process of new graduate nurses or nurses transitioning to labor and delivery. My ideal orientation would offer support to new nurses for the first two years of the career in labor and delivery. The two-year orientation would break down the steps of learning and coaching as follows:
1. All beginning nurses will receive 3 months of shadowing and hands on training (Novice).
2. By month 4 the new nurses are expected to take an assignment under supervision of a preceptor (Advanced).
3. By month 6 the new nurses should be taken full assignments and requiring very little help but able to utilize other staff nurses as a resource (Beginner).
4. By the end of the first year the all new nurses should be functioning independently on the unit with very few questions unless it’s something new, they didn’t learn in orientation (Competent).
5. After
