Mathilde Loisel, the main character in Guy de Maupassant?s story the necklace was a pretty and charming woman who was born into a family of clerks. She lived in poverty all of her life. She had no other choice but to dress plainly, to look at plain walls, shabby chairs, and ugly curtains. One day her husband reached home with a large envelope; in this envelope was an invitation to the palace for a ball. Loisel was very vain and wanted to look her best at this ball so she had her husband purchase her a brand new gown and she borrowed a diamond necklace from her friend Madame Forestier. Loisel looked stunning when she arrived at the ball. All eyes were on her when she entered the doors. Unfortunately she had lost the necklace that she had borrowed. Loisel only noticed that the necklace was gone when she returned home. The results from this mishap are entirely too harsh for Madame Loisel and her husband.
