African History
1. According to Henry Louis Gates, almost 50% of the Afro-American literary tradition was created when ?it?s authors and their black readers were either slaves or former slaves?.
2. Slave narratives were produced for many reasons. One was to inform others of the hardships that slaves endured. Slaves wanted people to hear their stories, and learn from their experiences. It was believed that ?in literacy came true freedom for the black slave?. This is another reason that so many narratives were written. The only way that slaves could truly be free was to express themselves in their writing.
3. Slave narratives were produced in two ways.
