In concepts of the nursing metaparadigm, Betty Neuman defines environment as “All internal and external factors of influences that surround the client or client system.” (McEwen, 2014). She identifies three factors which influence the client include: (1) Internal environment which is the internal stresses that affect within the client, (2) external environment which exists outside the client, and (3) created an environment which acts like a defense mechanism from natural stresses (Alligood, 2014). The reason I chose Betty Neuman’s definition of environment is because she views client and client system as not only an individual, but also a family, group, and a community. Also, her concept of environment help nurse to provide care in a comprehensive manner.
