One of the first things I remember about my childhood is my third birthday party in Walt Disney World. My brother and sister on either side of me and my custom Minnie mouse cake was on the table in front of me. Though I don’t remember much more from this time, I know it was a very happy time in my life with many good memories to follow throughout my childhood. I believe one would say I grew up with “privilege”.

My mother was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to a hairdresser, and her father being in the army. She was raised for the most part “well off”; however, her parents were pretty strict with her. From what I understand this was with intentions of wanting the best for her. My dad was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland with four other siblings to a more than less poor family. When I asked my dad about this, he had a hard time explaining it because he won’t use the word “poverty”. He believed he had it a lot better than most people and wont compare himself to the harsh reality many people face. My dad joined the army in 1981 at the age of sixteen and served until late 2005. I chose to include this in my autoethonography because I find my parents background relevant to the beliefs they engraved in me and their experiences helped to shape me.
