1 Describe how memory impairment can affect the ability of an individual with dementia to use verbal language
Memory impairment is one of the most common symptoms of individuals living with dementia. Due to memory loss, individuals with dementia often forget the right words to use in a conversation. As a result, people with dementia suffer from speech difficulties such as stammering or slow speech. Because of memory impairment, people with dementia may not remember the subject of a conversation, and will change topic frequently, they can also be repetitive. Due to memory loss, environment, your approach and other medical conditions, people with dementia may use inappropriate verbal language.1 List different techniques that can be used to facilitate positive interactions with an individual with dementia
Make sure the individual is conscious and not sleeping
Noise free environment
Be patient
Use of gestures, writings, cards and pictures if required
Use clear, short and simple phrases for conversation
Repeat conversation if required
Nod gently when the individual is replying or trying to reply
