The way I viewed literacy is ever changing as I gain or deepen my knowledge base. I never thought in a million years that I would be seating in a class taking a language and literacy class. As I had a narrow way of viewing literacy. I thought at first literacy was just a person’s ability a read. To be honest, I never gave it thought of how the reading process takes place in my earlier life. I just knew it was something you had to know how to do in order to becoming successful in life. As a result, my parents engaged us as children to read a wide range of material. For example: signs, the bible, poems. I remember when I was seven I received the book entitled: oliver twist. This book was like a nightmare to me. it had many words that were difficult to pronounce. However, it opened my mind to multisyllable words.
