Promoting effective communication is one of the most important skills for any staff member in health and social care setting. It allows us to act in a safe and effective manner in any given situation, where many of those situations can be very challenging and distressing.
Effective communication is based on a understanding of an individual. Understanding level of individuals communicational skills allows us to form our approach to him/her.
In that sense, effective communication is a set of both verbal and non-verbal (body movement, gestures, facial expression) factors, as well as the appropriate enviroment setting.
Again, depending on the capacity of an individual, we will communicate accordingly, but most definitely we will try to approach individual in calm and soothing enviroment with as little as possible distractions.
We all react to tone and pitch of ones voice, so these also need to be used on a calm level so we don’t create distress.
Situation may ask for a hand gestures, which is a good addition to verbal instructions.
