The role that a carer might have in care and support for an individual with dementia is being, understanding, caring and also being able to see things the way that individual sees them. The carer has to be able to show empathy for the individual at all times and help them realise that they are there to assist them in any way they can. They will also realise that their feelings regarding their situation are being considered. Using a person-centred approach, it makes sure the individual is being treated as a unique person and not be treated like everyone else who has the same condition. A carer must recognise that a person’s needs are completely different which means the individual keeps their dignity and that they receive the self-respect which they are entitled to and that the carer recognises their social needs whilst taking into account their safety and physiological needs.
