RESPONSE/ CRASH
The movie CRASH created by Paul Haggis, illustrates the struggle that we still are facing today. The movie took place in LA a city of different races. CRASH main focus was racism but touches aspects of all social issues such stereotypes, gender, morality and social class level.
The movie serves to bring forth the intensity with which people exercise racism every day and in every second action and decision they make. By doing so, the movie makes it apparent that racial differences exist. In one scene, a black film director named Cameron is pulled over by a racist police officer named John Ryan. Cameron’s wife is with him not only was this a part of being profiled as a black man he also had to belittle his manhood in front of his wife.not only did he have to deal with being stereotyped, he also had to suffer racism and his lost of his gender role. His wife thought he was less of a man because he did not protect her. His wife also reminded him that” we are black”.
CRASH when a white police officer takes a stand against racism. However, in one of the last scenes, he gives a black hitchhiker a ride while off-duty. While his passenger makes friendly conversation this strongly anti-racist police officer simply doesn’t believe anything he says. He misreads his passenger as being antagonistic. When the black man reaches into his pocket, the rookie officer feels threatened and quickly shoots him, killing him.
CRASH also point to social class difference, For instance, the African-American director and his wife, the African-American police officer still at a middle class level was reminded that were yet at still Black and not good enough. The DA who does not want to go on air because he does not want to lose the black vote.
Crash was a reminder that everyone judges everyone else. Everyone gets hurt. It is our job to look at people with an open mind and remember they have feelings just as us. Racism is something that is taught, learned behavior. Crash was a reminder that people are being judged every day. Even though we all know it is not morally acceptable to do so, people continue to judge. To assign a label to two men walking down the street. To think they know the life history, or could guess it pretty well if they were given a chance. This movie was a reminder that no matter what the race, everyone is judged, stereotyped
