Since many years, the study of Social influences have been an integral and vast field of study in Psychology. ‘Social influence’ may be defined as “change in an individual’s attitudes, thoughts, feelings or behavior that results from interaction with another individual or group . It is often seen as a process by which individuals make real changes or alter their behaviors in respect to their feelings or even beliefs based on interaction with others who may share similarities and be viewed as desirable and expert.” (L. Rashoutte,2007).
Social influences have been a topic of discussion for many psychologists and is a subject matter that relates to the study in social-psychology as a result of which, significant research has been conducted by various psychologists from years . There are several forms of social influences, including major influences knownsuch as Conformity, Compliance and Obedience- all of which may have varying impacts on different people in a society.
Usually Compliance is noted when a person changes his or her behavior as a response to two types of requests known as either ‘explicit’ or ‘implicit’ request, made by somebody else . It is often known as an ‘active form’ of social influence due to intentional initiation by a person. In addition, it can conceptually be considered as an external form of social influence as it is more focused on the change in outward behavior.
