I believe there isn’t just one but several problems affecting the educational sector. Firstly, the issue of inadequate funding is a major flaw that spreads across most public schools around the world for reasons best known to those in charge of allocating such funds. Most schools who started off right have become shadows of themselves due to inadequate funding and this ultimately results to dilapidated structures and under-staffed teachers. Often times you hear the phrase” education is not for everyone” and one cannot but wonder how such mentality has been tolerated over the years. It is such phrases that give life to another deep rooted problem in the educational sector, racial segregation.
Racial segregation in the public school system has gradually found a place in the society whereby the word “reconstructing” for ghetto schools only means a few unimpactful changes around the structure instead of the system. The idea of “ghetto schools” still appears to be accepted in some arears offering a sobering reminder of the nation’s history when it comes to racial and economic isolation in classrooms. These schools are sometimes seen in areas regarded as death-zones where there is little or no security and having your child there as a student is at one’s own risk.
Another major problem is the issue of inadequate welfare, students are often seen looking sickly or cannot attend class due to poor welfare or unaffordable healthcare system. Children from poor homes are highly affected by this system because quality education and healthcare is beyond their reach. Lack of good nutrition is still part of the many woes these children are face with. We then have to ask ourselves how possible is it for underprivileged children to receive adequate welfare and quality education when the so-called social policies are not in their favor.
