Cultural consideration we need to remember are, in general, for all cultures “areas that warrant cultural sensitivity include pain assessment, eye contact, personal space, and perception of disease or illness, time orientation, use of folk medicine and remedies, and differences in ethnic background beliefs regarding health maintenance, protection, and restoration”(GCU, 2012). For the interview with Sue Li we need to consider what she holds important being Asian American. According to The Office of Women’s Health, OWH, (2012) we should make sure she speaks and more important understands English. OWH states that 1/3 of Asian Americans do not speak English well. Many may not know about risk factors for disease or the role of preventative health care. Talk to Sue Li about her cultural beliefs pertaining to health and illness if they conflict with western medicine (OWH, 2012).
Abuse Assessment Screen is a tool nurses can use in their own health care settings. This tool may be used to quickly screen for domestic violence. It is formatted so no one feels singled out. If any of the questions are answered with a yes, follow up question need to be asked. These questions will be designed to assess how recent and how serious the abuse is (Jarvis, 2016). As we have discussed in previous weeks nurses are mandated reporters. Our discussion was about child abuse but whether the abuse is on a child, adolescent, adult or the elderly, man or women, we are authorized by law to report any knowledge or reasonable suspicion (McCulloch, 2012).
