Since the 20th Century

Since the 20th Century, researchers and experts in the field of psychology have become increasingly interested on how to understand the challenges experienced by children who have broken families. The family is the fundamental unit in society which consists two parents and their children (Miriam-Webster Dictionary). It is the root connection of a child to the society. Separation or death of one parent would result to a broken family.
In the Philippines, family is defined as the child’s initial source of knowledge. The parents are the first teachers of their child who teaches them all the basic aspects in understanding the world (BlaBlaWriting). According to Jacob (2013), the Philippines and the Vatican are the only nations in the world that do not legalize divorce. However, he also stated that there is a constant rise of Filipinos who favor divorce. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (2017), there is a decrease of 20.1 percent in the reported marriages from 2005 to 2015. Having a broken family may lead students to have psychological, emotional, spiritual and mental problems (BlaBlaWriting). This was supported by Rizada (2007), who stated that children of divorced parents would likely to have behavioral problems than those of non-divorced parents.
