The aim of this report is to investigate safety features of a selected car and how they help reduce the impact of a crash. Crumple zones became a national standard in 1993 because the death rate increased due to insufficient safety features. The effect of a crumple zone is designed to absorb and redistribute the force of a collision. This safety feature absorbs some of the energy from the impact, preventing it from being transmitted to the occupants. Crumple zones and Newton’s Laws of motion relay to each other. As a car hits an object, it will cause the car to come to a stop or slow down (Newton’s 1st Law). The car has a certain amount of force, which can be calculated by Newton’s 2nd Law – the result of the car’s mass and its acceleration, the effect of force can be decreased by making the impact over a longer time period, by making the crumple zone collapse slowly instead of an instant collision, which means that the people in the car aren’t as badly affected as they would’ve been if there was no crumple zone the force is lessened .If the force of the car is decreased through Newton’s 2nd Law and impulse, then the equal and opposite force exerted will also be less (Newton’s 3rd Law).
