Oasis Theory
Proposed in 1908 by Raphael Pumpelly, an American geologist and explorer, this theory is predicated on climatic change as the basis of the start of agriculture. Due to dry spell both humans and animals converged close to oasis. It was there that animals where first domesticated (put under the management of man) and seeds were planted. However, this theory finds opposing views because climatic data do not support it.
A general theory explaining the development of agricultural and the Neolithic way of life that was first put forward by Pumpelly in 1908, reiterated by Newberry in 1920’s Simply stared the argument runs that as the climate got warmer and drier in the early post glacial period, people, plants and increasingly restricted fertile areas.
The symbiosis that developed included the “domestication” of plants and animals through the manipulation.
This theory is a core concept in archeology referring to one of the main hypotheses about the origins of agriculture. First put by V.G childe “the most ancient Near – East” the oasis theory argues that the reason people starting living in settlements were because during a dry sell the only livable place was near oases.
In addition, plant domestication occurred in at least, 10 to 11 regions around the world. The beginning of agriculture thus marks a clear watershed and defines one of the major ecological changes in the history of the planet.
