In my community assessment I conducted a walking survey in two communities: The Upper East Side and East Harlem in New York City. You might be wondering what exactly is a walking survey? Well a walking surveys are observations that you make as you walk through any community. Essentially you walk through a block, and as you walk, you should be observing the general community. Things to examine can be the housing, public spaces, environment quality, race and ethnicity, and etc. The goal is to help you better understand a community in general or a specific condition or aspect of it. Assessing a community usually revolves around the goal of treating the community as a client and improving its overall health. In addition, community assessment is also useful in understanding why certain conditions such as diseases or others are more prevalent in this community as to another community or communities.
