Learning the speaking skill is the most important aspect of learning a second or foreign language and success is measured based on the ability to perform a conversation in the language (Nunan, 1995). Fluency in the said language may give you a lot of opportunity in taking jobs. It also enable us to communicate and interact with other people and understand other culture. Fluency is the measurement of human’s intellect abilities and status.
Speaking is a tool to communicate ideas that are arranged and developed accordance with listener’s need (Tarigan, 1987, cited in Musaddat, 2008). Speaker should not only become fluent in the said language, They also should be able to analyze by clearly saying the right word to the listener, By further sharpening your skills in english, it will also help our vocabulary to deepen and widen, with this it will help us understand other native speaker and held a conversation.
Fluency is a key contributor for a successful reading, speaking and for expressing. With the ability to read smoothly and effortlessly with proper expression and with good pace. It contains three components: accuracy, automaticity and prosody. Accuracy by reading words correctly and automatically knowing each and every words without having to process them. Third factor is to have prosody by knowing intonation and their expressions.
According to Tatham and Morton (2006: 273) many people report that they can understand a language but they cannot speak it. A lot of junior high school can’t speak in English without stuttering or pausing because we tend to find the exact word first . Some of the students also can’t speak fluently in English because they tend to lose confidence and is afraid to be judge. In other words, speaking is the most complex and difficult skill to master (Hinkel, 2005, cited in Nazara, 2011).
Most of us can’t master the fluency because it is not our native language, it is also not the language we use in our daily life. If we ever did speak in English we only got a chance to speak it in small amount of time, still if we speak in our classes, we got smart shamed and feel discourage that causes our confidence to lose, afraid that they will be judge, it can also affect the students self-esteem.
Since effective language learning involves a variety of skills, practices and abilities, problems could be based in any of a number of areas, or there may be a combination of reasons for the lack of necessary and expected progress (Shank, 2001; Schwarz, 2003). Some of the reasons why they lack in fluency is that, they tend to lose interest in listening in class and tend to dismissed the topic because they think that it is not necessary to speak in english everyday, it is also not even our mother tongue, and they also don’t have someone to practice with. Most of junior high school can speak english fluently when practicing, writing or a little chat with friends, but when it comes to talking in classes, performances and other oral activities, speakers mind tend to scrabbled up the words because of pressure.
Since it is not our mother tongue and a language that we always use, we only got a chance to do so in class, but still in every class, it depends on the teacher if they will require us to speak in english. Brown (2001) points out that clustering, reduce forms, performance variables, and colloquial language are the factors that makes speaking difficult. What makes it difficult to study english is that, by speaking fluently, at first they must know the proper way of using words that comes of with different topics, where students tend to crumble them up and forgot where or when it should be used.
