In the given poem “Sonnet on the Death of Mr. Richard West” by Thomas Gray, the theme develops throughout a variety of different sections. The speaker starts by a description of the setting he is currently in. The sun appears to be rising as “Phoebus lifts his golden fire” (l.2) the birds are chirping and the “cheerful fields” (l.4) resume their “green attire” (l.4.). This concludes the first section (l.1-4) of the poem. In the second section the speaker then begins to describe his feelings as well as his current state. The speaker appears to be in a bad mood
