Aids in Africa
THE AIDS EPIDEMIC IN AFRICA
There has been a startling increase of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the leading cause of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) in Africa. So much so, that there has been public outcry from country to country. There have been protests and rallies to try to educate the public of the so-called apathy of the world.
One of the most startling countries is Botswana. This is a country located in southern Africa, just above South Africa. Slightly larger then Texas its population exceeds 1,568,000 people. This remarkable country has a 35.5% rate of total population affected by HIV or AIDS. There is something even more staggering; its continuing to grow. Amazingly, 44% of all pregnant women are HIV or AIDS positive.
There was a report that said, In four countries Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, and Swaziland life expectancy is now under 40 years (Xundu). This is a huge problem for countries that need to deal with Botswana for trade and raw materials. Botswana is a country, which has moved out of a developing nation status.
