Groups that are cohesive feel committed and unified: Cohesion has often been cited as a central and crucial element in the development of a team of people working together. The most widely used definition cohesion is ?a dynamic process which is reflected in the tendency for a group to stick together and remain united in the pursuit of its instrumental objectives and/or for the satisfaction of member affective needs? (Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1997, p. 3). Group cohesiveness varies widely based on numerous factors including the size of the group dependence of members upon the group achievement of goals status of the group management demands and pressures. For example, group cohesiveness increases strongly whenever the membership perceives a threat from the outside. This threat produces the high anxiety that strong group cohesiveness can help reduce. Effective teams have the ability to be more than just a group of individuals.
