In my opinion the most pivotal character in this story was Little Dee. The story is about a preacher by the name of Vernon Jones who is played by James Earl Jones. Vernon is an outspoken minister and a civil rights advocate with strong beliefs. The movie takes place in the 1950?s in Alabama, a time when people like Vernon didn?t exist. It depicts the life of Vernon Jones, the man who preceded Martin Luther King Jr. He was a pastor of a Montgomery, Alabama Baptist Church. He campaigned tirelessly for Civil Rights long before anyone else, and was truly a founder of the civil rights movement. Before leaving as pastor, Johns passed on his duties to Reverend King, who is surprisingly a very minor character in the story.
James Earl Jones played the role of the Reverend Vernon Johns, as the leader of a black congregation in Montgomery in the early 1950s.
