Shoeless Joe vs Field of Dreams
In the novel Shoeless Joe in 1982 by the Canadian novelist William Patrick Kinsella there are plenty of similarities and some differences with the movie Field of dreams released in 1989 and directed by Phil Alden Robinson. Before watching the movie Field of Dreams I thought it would be completely different from its novel Shoeless Joe, because the title was completely different and movie directors tend to change events to add more action or change the mood of the story. The novel and film were mostly the same, except for a few major differences. They both had the same feel to it, the novel was much more complex and detailed than the film, mainly because a film can’t be to long, the director simplified everything and kept the moral to every part of the story. Having read the novel and seen the film, it is clear that the film Field of dreams differs from the book in terms of its characters, the execution of certain events and the ending.
To begin, the novel Shoeless Joe and the film Field of dreams basically have all the same major events. Since it’s a movie, the events are not portrayed with all the details as the book is. In the novel, the part where Ray builds the baseball field takes several years because he builds each part of the field one by one, each time he builds a part a player shows up but in the movie it did not take long at all, Ray simply built the whole stadium all at once and all the players came out. In both cases the end result is a built baseball field, only one took much longer. In the story there are two characters that are not in the film, one is Ray’s twin brother and the other is Eddie Scissons. In the novel Ray’s twin brother, also known as Richard has a big role to play in the story, but in the movie he does not exist, the director decided to give his role to Ray in a way to make the it less complex and shorter.
To begin, in both novel and film the relationships between the characters are contrasted.
In the novel Annie was very accommodating of her hard working husband Ray who ran
Their farm. When Ray told Annie that he had heard voices in the field she was
interested in what he had heard. The words Ray heard were ‘If you build it he will
come.’ (Kinsella 5). He could not trust what he was hearing. At first he thought
He was dreaming. Ray knew the voice intended something about the baseball field.
When he told Annie about his dream she gave him her blessings and
Encouraged Ray. In the movie though Annie’s insight of
Her husband’s aspirations differed significantly. When Ray suggested the initiative to Annie,
She thought he was crazy and out of his mind. They had worked so hard to
Establish their farm that she did not want to give it up for such a risk. In the movie
Annie has portrayed some of the characteristics that her brother Mark had shown
In the novel. The bond between Ray and the voice also fluctuate between the
Two works. In the novel Ray was instantly able to understand what the
Voice was telling him. In the movie on the other hand Ray had a hard time
Understanding what the voice meant. These relationships were changed from the novel to the
motion picture. There are many characters in the novel that have been deleted or changed for
Consumer Purposes. In the novel J.D Salinger played a prominent role in Rays
voyage . The creator was unable to get consent from J.D Salinger to use his
name in the movie. As a substitute the film makers created a fictional character Terrance
mann, an African American who allowed the movie to appeal to a larger range of
Ethnic Groups. The novel also had two very significant characters, Richard kinsella
who was Rays twin brother and Eddie Scissons who had beforehand owned their
farm. “Richard Kinsella is my identical twin brother.”( Kinsella 33). These
Characters were totally deleted in the movie Field of Dreams. This was
perhaps so simplify the plot. The writers had to let the script
Flow easily enough so that wide-ranging viewers would understand. Therefore many
Changes were made to the characters.
