john b. priestley had formulated an inspector calls in 1945 where it was based in 1912. both of these dates are pertinent because it exposes that priestley wrote the play in a community arising from the second world war when people looked back fondly at pre-world war one. priestley used his didactic play to show that a 1912 civilisation was gradually being taken away by the upper classes and that we should change the world instead of returning back to the egoistic society in 1912. he also wanted to convey a message that we have to stop being self-obsessed and have to change our political views. for an example of a capitalist family as they were common amongst the higher classes in 1912 was the birling family who didnt take any responsibility for other people and he showed this by using the power of socialism represented by the inspector
