The Audubon Society was first started by George Bird Grinnell, in 1886. He invited readers of his magazine ?Forest and Stream? to write in and sign a pledge against harming any bird. Close to 40,000 people respond and Grinnell coins the fledging group The Audubon Society for the Protection of Birds, after the American naturalist and bird artist John James Audubon (1785-1851). He soon disbands the group due to the membership growing too rapidly. The next year, under the supported Forest and Stream, he prints ?The Audubon Magazine? Costing 50 cents per issue. Soon enough, in the next 10 years a woman by the name of Harriet Hemenway begins a campaign urging socialists to stop wearing feathered hats. Her efforts lead to the founding Massachusetts Audubon Society.
The Audubons mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earths biological diversity.
