Hester was married to a scholar. She came from Europe to Boston about two years ago and her husband was supposed to follow. Instead the Indians held him captive. Part of Hester?s punishment was to confess her partner in sin, but she refuses to. Hester?s husband Chillingworth was also in the crowd. Hester was with her baby who was born in sin.
