The Fix

The novel, The Fix, is a book showing the failure of the war on drugs in the United States in the past twenty years. The author, Michael Massing, paints an elaborate painting of all the factors contributing to the loss of drug control on the streets and in the heart of America. Massing also offers ideas to how the people and the government may be able to conquer the problem of drug abuse in our troubled society.

The Problem: In the introduction to the book Massing tells how no other area of the United States social police has fail like the war on drugs. The budget for the drug war went from $1.5 billion annual budget to more than $17 billion. The U.S. has done many things to stop drug abuse and drugs from leaking into the country such as sending spy planes to other countries to monitor drug production, and to hire confidential informants to bust drug dealers. As a result more than 1.5 million people have been arrested for drug related offenses and the prison inmate total for drug offenders rose from fewer than 30,000 in 1980 to over 300,000
