A Prayer for Owen Meany is a pretty thick novel with a lot of lessons to be learned in it. I was never taught the real meaning of having faith in something. And through reading this novel I have come a little bit closer to understanding a word that people use in everyday life. Having faith means having a confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, an idea, or thing. In this novel there are instances where faith is explained and exemplified. One instance is when Johnny and Owen were walking under the bridge and the Yankee Flyer passes over them. When this happens Owen gives his philosophy of life. Also when Owen is telling Johnny about his dream and Johnny does not want to believe in his dream. Finally, the best example in the book about faith is when Owen is with Johnny and Owen is asks him about the Mary Magdalene statue.

The first instance is when Owen and Johnny are walking underneath the railroad trestle and the Yankee Flyer passes over them. Johnny says what a coincidence and Owen very clearly disagrees with him. Owen thinks
