9000 years into the future, mankind has colonized planets throughout Space. On the planet of Caladan, we are introduced to Duke Leto. This is a powerful yet wise leader is preparing to leave for his new role as the governor of Arrakis, a desert planet. This planet is inhabited by the tough desert dwellers known as Fremen. Arrakis is famous for its abundance of a spice that is popular among many clans such as Leto?s own. Leto and his clan, including his mistress Jessica and son Paul, settle on Arrakis and begin expanding their powerful hold on the spice trade. But secretly, evil soldiers of the empire, known as Sardakkar, led by Baron Harkonnen, began plotting against Leto. A raid then occurs on House Atreides, and Leto is killed. In the meantime, his advisor and military leaders are imprisoned, and Paul and Jessica escape to the desert.
Jessica and her son join a fremen tribe and are greatly respected for telepathic powers they possess. The book tells us that Jessica is a Bene-Gesserit, the term given to a witch or follower of an ancient discipline.
